Past Events
Pāmamae Āwhina supports kiwis in need across the motu. Here are some of our past events.
Were you involved as a volunteer or a participant? Do you have a story to share? We'd love to hear from you! Contact us today at info@traumaaid.org.nz
HMNZS Manawanui
Trauma Aid supported the crew of HMNZS Manawanui following the recent loss of the ship. Working alongside our Defence Force colleagues, we provided expert care to the brave sailors as they continued to recover. This was the first deployment of GTEP within the NZDF and one of the largest in-person Trauma Aid missions to date.
Ōtāne School
A proudly small village in the Central Hawke's Bay asked for help, and the volunteers at Trauma Aid answered the call. We provided the largest group EMDR sessions for school children in New Zealand, ever. Over 50 students participated in our sessions, and we demonstrated that no community is too small when you have a big heart and an even bigger dream, to bring EMDR to All.
Aotea Great Barrier Island
The community on Aotea Great Barrier Island has been through significant collective trauma, and once again the volunteers at Trauma Aid Aotearoa stepped up to help. The leadership team at Aotea Health, the only health centre on the island, recognised the need for enhanced mental health support for the community following a recent recent tragedy. With a powerful combination of past leadership and new faces at the health centre, the community rallied and Aotea Health once again proved how they provide a critical service to the Barrier.
Online Support for the Hawke's Bay
Trauma Aid continues to offer free online therapy to anyone who needs support following Cyclone Gabrielle. We are happy to continue this mahi for as long as it takes, and we are committed to continue to support survivors in 2024 and beyond.
Cyclone Gabrielle Relief - November 2023
Trauma Aid once again answered the call from the Hawke's Bay and deployed clinical psychologists to increase the capacity of the local mental health service. Supported by the Napier Family Centre and our generous volunteers, we helped members of the community who continue to struggle after the storm.
Auckland Anniversary Day Flooding
2023 started off with intense flooding in Auckland, just as our largest city was celebrating their regional holiday. Trauma Aid was there to help, providing group EMDR therapy via our secure online platform to help kiwis in need.
Cyclone Gabrielle
Cyclone Gabrielle was the costliest tropical cyclone on record in the Southern Hemisphere. It made landfall in Aotearoa in February 2023, and even while the storm was devastating the North Island, Trauma Aid was preparing for an EMDR response to the storm.
We conducted four large-scale online EMDR sessions from March to May 2023, supporting kiwis in need wherever they were located. With our colleagues at Whakaora: The EMDR Recovery Group, we provided these sessions free of charge.
During the course of these sessions, it was decided that a seperate, charitable organisation was needed to coordinate the EMDR response to large-scale events in the future. From there, the process was started to build Trauma Aid Aotearoa into the organisation as it exists today.

Wellington Hostel Fire
In May 2023, a fire broke out at a hostel in Wellington, resulting in a tragic loss of five lives with many others injured. Pāmamae Āwhina was on scene in our capital city within days of the fire, and we supported those impacted by this tragedy with group EMDR available at no cost to participants.
Napier Family Centre Groups
Our friends in Napier continued to feel the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle, and as the six month anniversary of the storm approached, we knew there was more work to be done. Along with our partners at Napier Family Centre, we coordinated a large-scale outreach effort to gather many participants and volunteers from the Hawke's Bay. Without the help of NFC, this event would not have been possible, ngā mihi!
